Chandramukhi : The Return Of The King

If you’re a die-hard Rajni fan, like I am, then ‘Chandramukhi’ first comes as a huge sigh of relief. And after the initial sense of relief has settled, you’ll then realize how awesome the movie really is.

In ‘Baba’, we saw a jaded and clearly over-the-hill Rajni struggling to get through the scenes. The whole movie was so lame and uninspired that at a certain point, even I felt Rajni had lost it. So, with that playing at the back of my mind, I was understandably very apprehensive about how ‘Chandramukhi’ was going to turn out.

But in this movie, the Rajni that we know and love so much is back with a bang. Looking extremely fit for his age, he fights and dances like a twenty year-old. His face has that glow and energy which was so sorely missing from his previous effort.

Right from his trademark kick-ass introduction, Rajni has us captivated. And by the time we’re done marveling at his miraculously youthful look, it’s time for the interval. The first half is straight out of the Rajni movie text-book. Three songs, a fight, some comedy and the beginning of a romance, the formula is applied to near perfection.

Now I’ve seen ‘Manichitrathazhu’, the Malayalam movie of which this is a remake and I have to say that the makers have been pretty faithful to the original. While the first half has been played around with to suit Rajni, the second half is almost a frame-by-frame reproduction. But that’s not a bad thing, because the original totally rocks, as does this version!

I’m not going to discuss the plot here for obvious reasons. It is a suspense thriller and so, it’s better you watch it for yourself. However, don’t worry, it’s not all serious. There’s enough and more humour to keep you feeling at ease.

The rest of the cast has done a very good job, rising to the occasion whenever necessary. However, after Rajni, the most screen time goes to Saurav Ganguly, the captain of the Indian cricket team, who appears prominently on all the Tata Indicom advertisement hoardings that appear almost throughout the film.

Everything seems to have fallen into place perfectly in this movie. The music is absolutely superb and all the songs are picturised brilliantly. Overall, it’s only too obvious that Sivaji Productions has a sure-fire box-office winner in their hands.

To sum it up in one word – Awesome!

That is the stupidest review I've seen yet... and Mark, how can you call it 'fair' when you haven't even seen the movie yet? have you ever considered the fact that the reviewer may also have a blatant anti-rajni mindset just like you...

And no, we Rajni fans don't go around praising evwerything he does.. if you take care to read my review, you'll notice how at the very beginning I call Baba lame and uninspired but Chandramukhi is far from it.. it totally rocks!

And Mr. Surya the reviewer says,

"Nothing much to speak about on the Story, Rajini helps to get rid of a Spirit in a bunglow which his friend Prabhu has purchased to stay in temporarily untill his road contract gets completed."

That just shows how well he's understood the story!

Wow, I didnt know it was possible to give such a glowing review for a less than average movie. No offense mate, but Rajini looks over the hill in Chandramuki, his makeup sucks, the fight sequences are there without rhyme or reason. I especially loved that scene where Rajini reads the Bhagavad Gita in the middle of the night, wearing sunglasses! And as to Mumbai Express, I think you would have seen the movie by the time you read this comment, so, are you going to eat your words or what?

From your blog i gathered that you were a fan of Hitchhiker's,Mani ratnam,FRIENDS...besides being a member of Mensa (the people with the highest IQ).And it comes as quite a surprise when you also claim to be a die-hard Rajinikanth fan.Something just does not add up there.
Anyways, this is one of my favourite blogs. And congrats on the IIM admit.

Hey Antimatter,

"so, are you going to eat your words or what?"

When did I ever say anything about Mumbai Express other than the fact that I heard it was bad..

And yes, I saw it yesterday and thought it was ok. Not amazing but good.

But I went with 9 other people and none of them liked it.

And of course, you should know that Rajni movies shouldn't be evaluated using the same yardsticks as other flicks.

People, you should read this review. As far as the comparison with the malayalam original is concerned, it hits the nail right on the head..

Awesome, Vinod ? Bah. Where would you rate it among the other Rajni movies of recent times. IMNSHO, only Baba was worse. He should have retired after Padayappa.

It wasn't even campy (which even Vijaykanth scores high on). Vadivel was probably the only redeeming factor. Ok, Rajni was unintentionally funny too at times, almost forgot. Like the time he was wearing red trousers. Or, as someone already mentioned, wearing sunglasses in a dingy room reading whatever he was reading. I felt bad for Nasser though: he deserves to be involved in better movies.

i have seen the movie and i haven't commited the blunder of comparing it to the original when i say it's at best ordinary.....funny in parts, but even those portions have been stained by needless 'double meaning''s a shame that an actor of rajnikant's stature had to resort to them.i think he has redeemed himself after the baba fiasco but to say it is the return of the king is a gross exaggeration.i think the fan club reactions reflect their inability to accept the fact that he is a spent force in kolly wood.

Just watched the movie....very enjoyable...better than I thought it would be....but don't u think the movie did not need Rajini? ( due apologies to all Rajini fans but I think that's true)

Hey Vinod,

Just saw the movie.Nothing special about it. Rajini was not needed for this film in my opinion. And it was totally hilarious whenever he tries to speak english.Shycoshish(for psychosis) is just one example. Plus the comedy with Vadivel was extremely vulgar. Rajini has stooped so low just to give his C-grade audience a few cheap laughs.Pathetic.The work of a desperate man who badly needs a hit and has compromised heavily on all fronts.

Having read about the intro scene of Thalaivar, I decided to see it. It was hilarious. I laughed uncontrollably at the chewing-gum scene.

I think you're being unfair to Captain by calling him a comedian while letting Rajini go.

"he fights and dances like a twenty year old"..matrix was a movie meant to be unreal with anything possible..i know rajni movies fall under the same category, but atleast they could go easy on the ropes, they could have used them for something useful out of your tsunami blog.jyothika was probably the saving grace of this movie, it was humour at its worst for sure humour has not come down to the level of "super power!" sniffing into a bowl under the sheets. next time you review a movie, be it a rajni a.k.a. demi-god ripped-off badly made absoulutely "thrilling" movie, atleast categorise it as a bad movie, and then go on about the fun part, which it probably was, after all as per collection, even baba was a super hit by any standards. after all spb as oruvan oruvan definitely capitivates..devuda devuda..i think rajni can still shake his hips well(yes we did learn that dance in kindergarden)..

i'm not a great fan of rajni, but after watching baba years back and watching this movie, i can say he has done a good work at it!
i saw all the three "major" movies released for the new year, and needless to say chandramukhi was the decent of the three (other 2 are sachein getting out in MumbaiX)..
